Road Conditions: The gravel road to the Haven can be quite a challenge at times in between grading and after summer rains, so we recommend that you drive here in a bakkie, 4 x 4 vehicle or a vehicle with high clearance

Directions
There are 3 alternatives:
- Willowvale– shortest in distance, longest on dirt (85kms) but most scenic.
- Elliotdale via gravel road– approximately 10 km longer than the Willowvale route, less gravel road (75kms) and the quickest.
- Elliotdale via the Coffee Bay / Mqanduli road. Least gravel road (55kms) longer -recommended in very wet conditions.
Willowvale
Take the N2 through Butterworth to Dutywa. At the traffic lights (if working) turn right towards Willowvale. Pass through Willowvale (be wary of unsigned speed bumps and potholes).
Approximately 100 meters beyond the shell garage on your left, turn left to King Hintsa’s Grave / Dwesa. Drive approximately 14 km’s until you reach a T junction. Turn right towards King Hintsa’s Grave. After approximately 2kms, the road forks. Keep left and follow the sign to King Hintsa’s Grave (if the signpost is still there).
Pass King Hintsa’s Grave on your left. Continue for about 10 km’s until the road forks. Take the Elliotdale fork to the left. Do NOT turn fork right as this takes you to Dwesa. You will pass a couple of trading stores on you right hand side. The road takes you down the magnificent Mbashe Pass and over the single lane “5 Kings” bridge. Continue up the pass until you reach a T junction. Turn right when you see the ‘HAVERN’ sign.
The road forks at the 18 km mark. Keep right until you reach a gate at the entrance to the Cwebe Nature Reserve. Continue down the road for approximately 4 km’s. The Hotel’s boom gate will become visible.
Elliotdale – Gravel Road
Pass through Dutywa and drive towards Mthatha. After approximately 48 km’s (1 km beyond the 40 km’s to Mthatha sign) look for a sign to Elliotdale. Turn right and follow the tar road parallel to the N2 for approximately 300 meters. Drive over a concrete cattle grid and turn left onto the gravel road to Elliotdale. Do not take any roads to the clinics signed along the way. After approximately 22 km’s the road becomes tar. Unfortunately you will only be on the tar for about 50 meters before a sign indicates that you need to turn right to the Haven Hotel. Follow the dirt road for about 18 km’s. The road will once again become tar. Continue on the tar for about 1 km until you see the “Haven” sign on your left. At the sign turn right back onto a gravel road towards the Haven. After approximately 16kms the road forks. Keep right and proceed until you reach a gate at the entrance to the Cwebe Nature Reserve. Continue down the road for approximately 4 km’s. The Haven Hotel’s boom gate will become visible.
Elliotdale – via Coffee Bay Road
Drive through Dutywa and drive towards Mthatha. Pass the Elliotdale turn off. Approximately 22 km’s from Mthatha take the Coffee Bay/Viedgsville off ramp to the left. At the stop sign turn right continuing under the highway to Coffee Bay/Viedgesville. Cross over the railway line. After about 16 km’s you will reach Mqanduli. Drive through Mqanduli (you will see a petrol station as you leave Mqanduli on your right). Approximately 7.5 km’s beyond Mqanduli there is a road to the right. Look for the various signs “Haven Hotel” / “Boxer Superstore” or “Madweleni Clinic” on your right. Turn right. Do not miss this turn as you will end up in Coffee Bay and be rather frustrated. Drive 15km’s along this tar road to Elliotdale. Once you’ve reached Elliotdale, drive for 3km’s through the town (beware of the potholes and speedbumps) to the top of the hill. At the top of the hill on your left you will see a construction site. At this point turn left onto a gravel road to the Haven – there should be a sign that says ‘The Haven Hotel’.
Please note that it is advisable to arrive at the Haven Hotel during daylight hours.

Head south from Mthatha on the N2. Approximately 22 km’s from Mthatha take the Coffee Bay/Viedgesville off ramp to the left. At the stop sign turn left to Coffee Bay/ Viedgesville.
The large green Coffee Bay sign was blown over in 2010 and has not been replaced. Look for a small brown sign indicating “Coffee Bay”.
Cross over the railway line. After about 16 km’s you will reach the small town of Mqanduli. Drive through Mqanduli (you will see a petrol station as you leave Mqanduli on your right). Approximately 7.5 km’s beyond Mqanduli there is a road to the right. Look for the various signs saying “Haven Hotel” / “Boxer Superstore” or “Madweleni Clinic” on your right. Turn right. Do not miss this turn as you will end up in Coffee Bay and be rather frustrated.
